Scary Christians

scary Christians

I’ve commented on a couple of blogs recently, where the topic was Christians who scare others away from Christianity by their behavior – judgmental, hypocritical, arrogant, etc. I agree that the biggest hindrance to Christianity is Christians. And I relate to something Ghandi once said: “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike Christ.” Yet the truth is, none of us is like Christ. Some get close, but none lives the completely humble and love-filled life Jesus lived.

I can be quick to criticize ugly Christians. But that just brings me closer to their level. And the truth is, we are all broken humans, with a human nature that is so unlike Christ. For our nature is filled with pride and selfishness, some more full of themselves than others. But it’s who we are as humans. For me to criticize ugly Christians is hypocrisy.

Might an ugly Christian be a sign that the person doesn’t know Jesus very well? Could be. But who am I to judge?

By the way, most Christians I know are not very scary. Except maybe for my friend who is a Third Day* groupie, chasing their concerts all over the country. Happy Birthday dawg.

*Third Day = Christian rock band

(btw, my Third Day groupie friend isn’t scary in the context mentioned in this post. His friends just like to tease him because of his obsession.)

First, my writing isn't about me. Don’t want the attention, don’t want to feed my ravenous ego (yep, I’m just a typical pride-plagued human). But I love writing - it gets me out of bed when it's way too dark, just so I can do some writing before heading off to work. I write because I’m passionate about God, Jesus, His Spirit, and His truth. And, I feel the Holy Spirit gets shortchanged in the world we call Christianity. The truth is sometimes lacking too.

  1. Thanks for posting. It seems like there are a ton of those types of posts going around. Just this morning I posted a blog about God’s warning to me about this very thing, being careful not to look down on other Christians that may not be as far along as me.

  2. Agree… We all come across scary Christians from time to time. Guess, they are on their journey. Hopefully, as they grow and mature they transform and more Christ like. [More loving.]

  3. I think you nailed it on the head. You said, “Who am I to judge?” It makes me wonder if I should not have wrote the articles I wrote. Am I sinking to their level by writing it? Better yet, am I the scary Christian an don’t realize it? You have given me something to think about.

    • Here’s a thought: As we shouldn’t judge others, don’t judge yourself either. As with everything, the answer lies with an ever-growing relationship with God, or that’s what works for me. Instead of looking at our own faults, lets focus our attention on Jesus.

    • That is probably one of the wisest comments on judgement I have ever heard. Most people do not look at judgement as ones self as well. May I quote you?

    • If you like it, share it. After all, it’s not from me… I get my inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
